🚨 Are CPD seminars still worth it in the age of AI and online learning?
Why are we paying ₱1,500 for 3 CPD units, just to sit through sessions nobody truly listens to—online or in-person? Some even give 15 units to architects and only 3 to civil engineers for the same topic on construction !
The CPD system needs a serious review. It's time to push for reforms that are fair, accessible, and actually beneficial to professionals.

To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to express growing concerns shared by many licensed professionals regarding the current implementation of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Act in the Philippines.
In today’s digital era, the landscape of learning has drastically changed. With the advent of the internet and the rise of artificial intelligence, professionals now have easy and affordable access to a vast range of educational resources. For the price of a basic internet subscription, one can engage in meaningful, self-paced learning anytime and anywhere. Yet despite this, professionals are still required to pay ₱1,500 or more to attend CPD seminars that often provide as little as 3 units—raising serious questions about the fairness and effectiveness of the current system.
Even more problematic is the inconsistency in how CPD units are allocated. For example, a seminar may award 15 units to architects and only 3 units to civil engineers, even when the topic is clearly focused on construction—an area heavily rooted in civil engineering. This disparity reflects a lack of proper alignment between course content and professional relevance.
It is also worth noting that the actual impact of many CPD seminars is minimal. Whether conducted in person or online, many attendees participate only to fulfill the requirement. In physical seminars, participants often just show up for attendance, eat the snacks and meals, and leave without meaningful engagement. Similarly, in online sessions, it is common for participants to log in, mute the session, and simply leave the chat room running in the background. There is little to no assurance that learning actually takes place.
This situation not only diminishes the purpose of continuing education but also financially burdens hardworking professionals without providing real value. Worse, it has opened the door for some CPD providers to operate more like businesses than educational institutions—charging high fees for subpar, checkbox-style compliance.
I respectfully urge the concerned agencies and policymakers to review and reform the CPD Act’s implementation. A system meant to enhance professional competence should be accessible, fair, and genuinely beneficial, not an obligation exploited for profit.
