I went to town today, and when I got home, my dog Tucker was waiting for me at the door.
You would have thought I had been gone for a week.
It did not matter how long I had been gone. It did not matter whether I said goodbye before I left. It did not even matter if I had been frustrated with him earlier for making a mess.
I was home.
And to him, that was enough.
Watching that excitement made me think about how complicated we make gratitude.
We attach conditions to it.
I will appreciate you when you appreciate me. I will show you love when you show me love. I will forgive when you apologize. I will be grateful when life gives me something worth being grateful for.
We keep score.
But what if gratitude was not something life had to earn from us?
What if it was simply part of who we chose to be?
The animals we call family seem to understand something we often forget. They are present. They are not replaying yesterday or keeping a record of who was right. They recognize the value of this moment because this moment is what they have.
Maybe that is something we can practice today.
Look at the people you love without immediately thinking about what they did wrong, what they owe you, or what you wish they would change.
Just be grateful they are here.
Gratitude does not require a perfect life.
It requires awareness of what is already in front of you.
