LOCATION:    An unknown world whose name is lost to time...

Sinjihnn Du'Maure and Selina Jhaat-Soongh Du'Maur stood on the edge of the tunnel opening, looking into the distance at the obviously artificial, ancient and non-Human structure. They each took a moment to check the status of their suit's life-support capability and test the comms channels connecting them to 'Manticore' in the distances behind them. The test pings went through and returned without incident.
"Y'know, when we got married, the vows should have included 'For warped and weirder' as well as 'For better and worse'." Selina commented as she and Sin studied the ancient pyramidal structure in the distance while she readied a laptop-sized, somewhat bulky device carried on a shoulder strap.
"Yeah, I can't argue that one. The rig you're carrying is better than the standard scanner I've got, what's it saying?" He replied to her.
"We'll need to get closer for more fine details but I can tell you that it's stone...but with some odd readings. There's an electromagnetic 'echo' from it just after the scan pulse return. It's electromagnetically reactive to microwave energy. it's perfectly-made, or was. The software did a really precise reconstruction of it, and whoever built it was accurate to a very fine degree in precision crafting. It was hit with thermal effects, obviously. Not a bomb, nothing general-area-of-effect...maybe smaller cluster munitions, or very heavy laser-based weaponry." She told him as she worked with the laptop-sized unit.
"Everyone used to wonder; 'Why is the Universe so quiet?' and 'Are we alone?'. More and more we're finding things like this, evidence of a war on a scale we can barely begin to comprehend fought by several unknown civilizations." Sin commented.
"Well, Archeology and Xeno-Archeology are at long-last growth industries. They just better keep eyes-open for the usual battlefield leftovers...whatever those might be." Selina replied, looking at te distant structure again, refining settings and boosting power levels while connecting to the standard scanner Sin held and the one on her belt for additional processing capacity.
"More scans?" Sin asked as she nodded.
"Better safer than sorrier. I'm getting intermittent thermal flickers, some strange low-energy EM radio-frequency spikes. Whatever that structure is, it's not inert." She replied, examinging some readings and sendinga narrow-beam high-frequency, high-energy pulse-ping.
"We won't be getting any close then, not until we've sent some drones in for a better look. Who knows what this thing is? It could be a home, a comms relay station, a munitions depot or some secret weapons-testing lab. Blundering around like a bunch of idiots might get some or all of us killed." Sin answered with as Selina nodded in wholehearted agreement.
"Yeah, and that'd seriously interfere with the munchkin's mealtimes and snacks, which we just cannot have." She replied in perfect deadpan with a smirk of amusement while she worked, hearing Sin's chuckle over the suit comms.
"Cats, no matter where one goes in the Universe, life always revolves around them, and they revolve around their stomachs." Sin commented in amused reply.
"Well, it's worked out pretty well so-far." Selina replied with a grin.
