The Girl Who Beat the Thimbles

In a quiet town where everyone knew everyone, a traveling fair rolled in one evening, glowing with lights and whispering secrets on the wind. Among the rides and popcorn stands was a small wooden table with three silver thimbles glinting under a lantern. A sign read:

“Beat the game. Win the gold.”

Behind the table sat an old man with eyes like cracked marbles. No one ever won. People said he could move the ball with his mind.

Then came Ada, a quiet girl who watched the game for three nights straight. She didn’t play. She didn’t speak. She just watched — every shuffle, every hand movement, every smirk on the old man’s face.

On the fourth night, she stepped forward and placed a single coin on the table.

The old man grinned.
“Feeling lucky?”

“No,” Ada said. “I just learned your trick.”

He laughed. The game began. Three shuffles. One tap of the finger.

She pointed.

The man’s smile faded. He lifted the thimble.
The ball was there.

Gasps rose around the crowd. She had won.

But Ada wasn’t finished. She placed her winnings back on the table.
“Double or nothing.”

His hands moved faster this time — like lightning. He grinned again, certain.

Ada pointed to a different thimble this time.

He laughed, sure she’d lost.

He lifted it.

There was the ball again.

Silence. Then cheers.

Ada took the small pouch of gold, turned to the crowd, and said:

“Don’t chase luck. Learn the pattern, then walk away.”

The old man never came back to the fair.
