Mangosteen Extract Kills 99% of Breast Cancer Cells in Vitro: In this new study, alpha-mangostin, from mangosteen fruit, was shown to kill up to 99% of human breast cancer cells in vitro. Even more interesting is that for the first time ever, the researchers observed exactly how this mangosteen compound did this: by blocking Fatty Acid Synthase (FAS) and disrupting the cancer cell’s ability to make fatty acids—without which the breast cancer cells’ stop growing and die. It turns outs that many different cancers rely on Fatty Acid Synthase for their survival, which may explain why Mangosteen has been shown to be deadly also to prostate, liver, colon, and pancreatic cancers as well as Leukemia in other lab studies. By the way, mangosteen also disrupts Fatty Acid Synthase in normal fat cells—stopping them from accumulating more fat, and may therefore help with weight loss. As an added benefit, a recent clinical trial showed that 6 to 18 oz of juice significantly lowered an important inflammation marker in obese patients—and that may in turn lower the risk for heart disease and diabetes. Mangosteen juice as well as standardised supplement pills are available widely in health food stores, and may just provide an extra measure of protection when used along with a healthy, balanced diet rich in organic vegetables, fruit, herbs and whole foods.
