The Amazon Rainforest isn't actually the Earth's lungs. Most of the oxygen produced by the Amazon is consumed by its own ecosystem. Tiny organisms called diatoms are responsible for producing 40% of the Earth's oxygen. These diatoms reproduce rapidly, spreading across the oceans and producing oxygen through photosynthesis. When diatoms die, they form underwater particles that settle on the sea floor. As seas dry up, these dead diatoms turn into salt deserts, like those in Northern Africa. Massive sandstorms then carry the diatoms across the oceans, depositing them on the Amazon Rainforest, where they act as fertilizer. Diatoms originate in the rainforest, spread to the ocean, produce oxygen, die, create salt deserts, and are transported back to the rainforest, thereby supporting the very ecosystem that generates them.
