Was this too aggressive of me?

This is my first post here so I hope this is appropriate. I am looking for feedback on whether my response was over the top (it probably was) and what you all may have done instead.

Long story short I was at the grocery store cafe waiting for my coffee order and I see a table of 3 guys in suits get up, spread out and start talking to different people. One of them came up to me, extended his hand, and said excuse me have you ever read the bible?

I told him loudly that I have a PhD in neuroscience and that I do not have time for fiction. He got the hint and left to evangelize to someone else. I then re-approached him as he was talking to someone else (they also looked uncomfortable) and suggested that he keep his religion to himself, especially since there are children around. He said okay, and the two others in his group saw this interaction and they all started gathering to leave.

As they were leaving I went over to the customer service counter and told guest services that "there were people in the cafe trying to recruit me into their cult" and that they were trying to recruit other customers in the cafe as well. I said "Not even sure what religion or cult it was but they seemed to be pretty coordinated."

The manager seemed very disgusted and asked me to point them out but they had left. I looked for them in the parking lot and if I found them I was going to ask them back inside to see if the manager would be willing to have them be permanently trespassed.

This is my neighborhood grocery store that I visit on average 3 times a week for the past 12 years so one side of me thinks I took this too personal because of that but the other side of me would prefer that people keep their religion to themselves in public. Is this too harsh?
