oWhen traveling to India, you don’t have to go in the cheapest train cabin, buy from hawkers, or stay at dirt cheap hostels to see the ‘real India’.

Am originally from India. It kind of irritates me when travelers (at least the ones who vlog) stay in dirty hostels, travel in the lowest fare class in trains, and buy from hawkers, in an effort to see the ‘authentic’ and ‘real’ side of India.

India is not just either opulent palaces or poor people. There’s a massive middle to upper middle class. And all of india is ‘authentic’. It’s not like France or Thailand where there are so many tourists entire districts and attractions it’s possible to be completely separated from locals and local culture.

Stay at an Indian chain hotel like Lemon Tree or Sarovar. Try food at malls or decent sit down restaurants. Shop at actual Indian department stores for Indian clothes or accessories. 99.9% f the clientele at the places I mentioned are Indians from India, and is not any less Indian.

The way a lot of tourists to India travel only perpetuates the stereotype that India is either opulent or poor and chaotic. And imagine how absurd it would be if tourists to the US stayed in an Airbnb in the Bronx and travelled by night greyhound, to see the real and authentic side of America.
