Some practical life advice from Kevin Kelly that stayed…

Some practical life advice from Kevin Kelly that stayed with me

I recently went through Kevin Kelly’s advice for young people and reorganized 68 of them into a simple list.

Some of these sound obvious at first, but I think that is exactly why they are easy to ignore. A lot of good advice does not feel deep until life proves it to you.

Here are the ones that stayed with me the most:

1. Learn from people who disagree with you. They may be wrong about many things, but they might also be seeing a blind spot you missed.
2. Ask “stupid” questions. Most of the time, other people are wondering the same thing but are too afraid to ask.
3. Set deadlines. A deadline is one of the best cures for perfectionism.
4. Listen deeply. When someone finishes talking, ask, “Is there anything else?” Sometimes the real answer comes after the first answer.
5. Do not take rejection too personally. Sometimes people are not rejecting you. They are just busy, distracted, or dealing with their own life.
6. If you are the smartest person in the room, find another room. Being around people who challenge you is uncomfortable, but that is usually where growth happens.
7. Be unique, not the best. There is no absolute “best,” but you can become hard to replace.
8. Your actions define you. You are not what you say you believe. You are what you repeatedly do.
9. Mastery often comes before happiness. Instead of only chasing what makes you happy, get really good at something. Joy often follows competence.
10. Experience poverty while young. Living simply for a while teaches you that you can survive with less. That makes future risks less scary.
11. The last 10% of a project may take 90% of the effort. This one hurts because it is true.
12. Do not waste a crisis. A crisis is painful, but it can also teach you skills you would never learn when life is comfortable.
13. Experiences are usually more valuable than possessions. Objects lose their shine quickly. Experiences change how you see the world.
14. Use the “tomorrow test.” If you would not want to do something tomorrow, you probably will not want to do it a year from now either.
15. Stay optimistic. Not because life is easy, but because the future is usually built by people who believe something better is possible.

What I like about this advice is that it does not ask you to be perfect. It just asks you to stay curious, stay honest, keep learning, and keep correcting yourself.

Some advice only makes sense after you have failed a few times.

Maybe good advice does not change your life immediately.
Maybe it waits until you are ready to understand it.
