Rant: do some people genuinely just travel for social kudos/the sake of it?
A friend of mine and I planned a trip to Italy for last month. We have travelled a lot together and have similar interests. She is an immigrant to Europe so visiting places is far more of a privilege than I have ever appreciated. She really soaks up everything: culture, language and food and I'm glad she's able to experiences these things I took for granted having a strong passport.
Long story short her sister wanted to come with her boyfriend and another friend (all three also from the same country as my friend). I said of course.
However once we got on the trip, I realised I made a mistake. They were bored of everything: Florence, Boring! Rome, Boring! Amalfi, once the photos had been taken for instagram, they were clearly bored. They didn't like any of the food we tried so they ended up ordering their native cuisine from a takeaway each night. My friend hadn't expected this and was completely embarrassed.
Nonetheless, the social media feed would have had you believe they were having the time of their lives, with people back home saying how jealous they were etc... Once we were back home they indicated that we should let them know when we had another trip planned.
Is this really what tourism is for a large chunk of people? #travel source
