Howdy everyone! I recently purchased an old Craftsman 12” band saw at a garage sale. It was in pretty good shape and I cleaned it up really well, replaced the tires, oiled it up and got a 1/4” and 1/2” blades for it.
The problem I am having is with tensioning the blades. To be honest, I don’t know enough about band saws to know for sure, as this is my first one. I removed the top wheel and removed the tensioning mechanism completely. I cleaned and oiled it. I replaced it and the wheel. The tensioning screw screw smoothly takes the sled all the way up and down smoothly without a blade on, but when I add either blade, the sled moves up only about 1/4” and no more, no matter how far I turn the tensioning screw. The blades get tighter up to a point, but I can’t get them from vibrating.
Should the tensioning sled move farther than a 1/4”? Shouldn’t the vibration in the blade diminish and stop?
The blade also twists some and also wanders while making cuts.
