Laid off from design job for the first time, was I in the wrong?
I guess this is a bit of a rant, because I just found out I wouldn't be working with a company anymore and that 'didn't have anymore work for me' .
A bit of background info would be that I am 21 and recently graduated from uni in July this year, where I studied graphic design. Up until the end of September I was doing some freelance work here and there, then got offered a 35 hour a week contract as a freelance designer. Basically I had to help create graphics for websites. First website I designed for went well, everyone was really happy with what I produced and got praise. My most recent project was rebranding a website which I was excited to do, I have personal projects on branding so I enjoy doing it.
But at the start of the project, I was hardly given any direction or brief and was told to browse Pinterest for ideas which made it harder to narrow down what they want, when I tried to show examples and ask for feedback I got left on read and hardly got responses. I had no idea whether my ideas were right, working, etc since I hardly knew the website/ brand I was designing for. Yesterday I actually received a brief, got examples, what they want done, which I thought was great. Started working on that yesterday and today and got on pretty well!
Because I hardly got any responses or feedback from anyone else, in the beginning of the project before I got the proper brief, I had to ask the web developer for some feedback and to answer any questions since I worked with him on a previous project. Was just about to send over my initial ideas and what I had so far to the group, but then got a call which said they can't keep pulling away the web developer from his project to work on this. Which is fair enough, but I haven't had much input from anyone else so it was really my only shot at getting this done.
I was told to work more independently, but I can't read minds? I was laid off today and my contract was terminated early. Sorry for going on a bit, but I kind of wanted to find out whether everyone else thought I was in the wrong with this? I don't have massive amounts of experience since I only recently left uni, but I thought it was a bit harsh?
