The company offered me a 22% raise and then took it back the next day

I've worked at the same company for a little over four years. Last month I had my annual review and it honestly went better than I expected. My manager said my performance was strong, highlighted several projects I'd led, and told me they wanted to keep me around long term.

The next afternoon HR sent me an official compensation letter. It included a raise of about 22%, which would've been the biggest increase I'd received in my career. I signed the acknowledgement form, thanked my manager, and even called my parents because I was pretty excited about it.

Then less than 24 hours later I got another email asking me to join a meeting.

HR and my manager were both there. They explained that leadership had reviewed compensation changes and discovered an "error" in the approved amount. Apparently the raise I was offered exceeded the budget for my position level. They apologized and said the document should never have been sent. The new offer was about half of what I'd originally been given.

I asked whether the first letter was actually approved before being sent out. Nobody gave me a straight answer. They just kept repeating that a mistake had been made and there was nothing they could do.

What really bothered me wasn't even the money. It was getting an official document, signing it, celebrating it, and then being told the whole thing basically didn't count because someone higher up changed their mind or didn't check the numbers.

I've had raises before. I've had raises denied before. But I've never had one awarded and then taken away the next day.
