aWhat are the biggest transitional moments in Comics?
Hey was having a different conversation that inspired this topic. What moments in Comic Book publication history can truly be called the biggest moments in terms of advancing the medium?
Key examples to me would be the advent of picture strips in Victorian England, followed by the birth of Newspaper Strips like Flash Gordon and The Phantom which led to the creation of Comic Books as a medium, the publication of Action Comics #1 nd Detective Comics #27 , The Eagle, The Beano and The Dandy entering publication during the early 1950s, The creation of Barry Allen as The Flash, the dawn of the Marvel Age in 1961 for the earlier eras, and also things like the British Invasion of American comics in the 1990s.
Another major one to me is the launch of 2000AD to complete with the popularity of American comics, superhero and otherwise, while other British boys comics were floundering from their once major popularity. 2000AD focused on the Science Fiction genre with the notion of retaining the format of British Boys Comics while also improving the quality and incorporating what was working from American and French Comics. Id also consider the publication of Metal Hurlant and it’s importation to the States as a major moment due to it introducing Bande Desse to the Anglophone world and being one of Moebius’s primarily publication sources.
I’ve already thought of a few obviously but I’m curious as to what other examples people have. Thanks for any answers #entertainment
