Anxious about attending a work happy hour where everyone already knows each other

I’m a relatively new employee, and my manager encouraged me to attend a work happy hour with coworkers I don’t know very well.

I’ve met a few of them before, and one thing that made me anxious was how close everyone seemed. They were talking about shared experiences, people they knew, and inside jokes that I couldn’t really follow. I found myself getting quieter and quieter because I felt like I had nothing to contribute.

Now I’m going to be spending more time with this group before the happy hour, and I’m nervous because everyone already seems comfortable with each other while I’m still the new person. I feel like everyone else has established relationships and I’m just trying to figure out where I fit in.

I’ve also never attended a work happy hour before, so I don’t know what to expect. I’m worried about making a bad impression, seeming awkward or standoffish, or not knowing what to talk about.

The only person I really know there is my manager, but they already have established relationships with everyone in the group and seem much more comfortable with them than I am. I’m worried that once conversations get going, I’ll end up feeling like an outsider while everyone else catches up with each other.

Has anyone else dealt with this? What are work happy hours actually like, and how do you handle being the only new person in a group where everyone already knows each other?

**TL;DR:** New employee attending a work happy hour with a group of coworkers who all seem close to each other already. I’ve felt left out in previous interactions with them, and I’m worried about being awkward, having nothing to talk about, and making a bad impression. Looking for advice.
