Buying local isn’t worth it

Unless someone is actually making their products by hand, there’s a good chance they’re buying the same mass produced stuff from the same Chinese manufacturers as everyone else, then marking it up and selling it in a local store. Why should I pay two or three times as much for something just because it’s sitting in a local boutique instead of a big box store?

I’m all for supporting local businesses, but I’m not paying extra just to support a middleman. If you’re making something unique, providing a service, or offering real craftsmanship, you deserve my business. But simply buying something wholesale and reselling it at a huge markup doesn’t make your business special just because it’s local.

Same carton, triple the price, I get the irritation. The part that still snags me is the stuff that is not the same object with a boutique sticker: the baker who actually made the loaf, the repair that happens because the shop is two blocks away, the produce that did not ride a truck for a week. Markup theater is real. So is the difference between a reseller and a maker. Where do you put the line, identical SKU or anything that did not come off a factory line with your name on it?
