The Trump administration plans to revoke B-1/B-2 business and tourism visas held by foreigners who have applied for or are seeking asylum in the United States. Reuters reported that the State Department is coordinating with the Department of Homeland Security on the effort. 🛂
The State Department did not give a total. Associated Press reporting cited by Reuters said the action could affect up to 200,000 people and cover visitor visas issued from 2016 through 2026.
B-1/B-2 visas are for temporary business or tourism visits, while asylum is a separate protection process for people seeking to remain in the country because of feared persecution. Filing an asylum claim does not itself decide the claim. ⚖️
Revocation would not necessarily bring immediate deportation, Reuters reported. People with pending asylum cases could lose their visitor classification while their claims continue through the applicable immigration process.
