Drug education loses credibility when it pretends every drug leads to a ruined life

I think many anti-drug campaigns lose credibility because they often rely on worst-case scenarios.

Young people hear things like “one joint leads to heroin” or “your life will be ruined,” then look around and see people who used marijuana without that outcome. Once they realize some of those claims are exaggerated, they may become skeptical of the entire message.

I think a more honest approach would be something like this:

“Some drugs can feel incredible. They can make ordinary moments seem more exciting, meaningful, or enjoyable. That’s exactly why they deserve respect.”

The danger isn’t always that your life falls apart overnight. Sometimes it happens gradually. Your motivation fades, your ambitions become smaller, and you slowly spend more time chasing short-term pleasure than building the life you want.

My view is that acknowledging why drugs are attractive would make prevention messages more credible and ultimately more effective than relying primarily on fear.
