What was the worst day for the UFC ever?
Personally, Imma go with April 10th 2010, at UFC 112.
Many fans aren’t aware of how much of a disaster that event was in the big picture.
UFC 112 was the first event ever held in Abu Dhabi, so promoters knew it couldn’t fail.
Vitor Belfort was expected to fight Anderson, but he got injured. Chael Sonnen couldn’t fight him either because of injury. So, Anderson ended up fighting Demian Maia.
Spider Silva had had a previous beef with Maia. Prior to the fight, the latter allegedly said something along the lines of “since spiders have 8 legs, i’m gonna take at least 3 of them home with me” (meaning: finishing the fight by heel hook).
Silva did not like it and proceeded to display a painful striking strategy, to prove a point, while refraining from finishing the fight. Anderson ended up being boo’ed by fans, and UFC promoters absolutely hated it. To this day, Anderson has a considerable amount of haters solely because of that fight.
In the co-main event, Frankie Edgar defeated BJ Penn in a very controversial unanimous decision. Eight MMA-media websites/personalities had Penn winning the bout, while only one website scored it Edgar.
MMA judge Douglas Crosby got Edgar winning all 5 rounds (50-45), which seemed crazy. He got hate from fans for it. Directly after the fight, he made a post on “MMA Underground Forums” with the aim of explaining his decision to the public. However, he proceeded to post very weird comments and even quoted Shakespeare in an eerie fashion. The forum post is still online.
UFC 112 failed so badly that the next big UFC event in Abu Dhabi happened 9 years later, at UFC 242.
