🚢 At least eight people died and 18 were missing after the passenger ferry FILOJET capsized shortly after leaving Kyrenia in northern Cyprus for Taşucu, Turkey, authorities said.
The ferry carried 267 people, including eight crew members; 241 were rescued. Survivors said the two-hulled vessel was moving erratically before an impact broke its bow and water entered.
The vessel later sank in about 514 metres of water. Local and Turkish coastguard vessels, a civilian boat and helicopters took part in the rescue, while relatives waited for information at a hospital and Kyrenia’s port gates. ⚠️
Authorities detained the captain and seven other crew members for questioning. Search operations and Turkish diving assistance were continuing; the cause of the capsize and the final toll had not been established.
