In 1578, during the battle of Alcácer Quibir between Portugal and Saadi(morocco), king Sebastião went missing(most probably killed), this led to a succession crisis that would end up with the Iberian Union, during which Portugal lost it's control over the spice trade and it's place as a major european power.
(Stoping context to say, what a dumbass, destroyed an empire because he wanted to play as cruzader)
Since the king's body was never found, a popular belief was born, claiming that Sebastião would one day return and get back portuguese glory, creating the "fifth empire", that would be "the last empire in the world", and would spread peace to everyone. It became much more structured throught an interpretation of the biblical book of revelations made by João de Castro in it's many writings, and the adaptations of father António Vieira, this legend/faith is called "Sebastianism".
The belief was adapted by supporters of the duke of Bragança(like the Vieira guy I said), the one who would end the spanish rule over portugal and become D. João IV, they used it to spread the idea of an independent portugal. after winning the Restauration War, Dom João even said that, if Sebastião actually returned, he would back down from the throne and crown him king(he would probably be dead from old age at this point...if he was alive throught all this time I mean).
Sebastianism was very popular from the 16th century until the 18th century in portugal and somewhat popular in late 19th between brazilian monarchists, the legend was repopularized/revisited by the book "Mensagem" by the writer and poet João Pessoa in the 20th century.
