Can you name a band other than R.E.M. where 99% of people know them, yet never heard most of their best songs?
R.E.M. became the “Kings of College Rock” with their first four albums; yet these songs despite their accolades with college radio, were at the time and are still completely ignored by mainstream radio. It took their fifth album and songs like “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It” and “The One I Love” to get the first mainstream awareness. It’s a crime that songs like “Begin the Begin”, “These Days” and “Fall on Me”, among so many others are only known to true fans. Incredibly, their first album, “Murmur”, beat Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album for Rolling Stones magazines “Best album of 1983” yet not a single song is ever played on the radio. Are they a true outlier or are there other examples of bands like this?

I'd say Nirvana, Metallica, Rolling stones & Beatles based on the amount of people ive seen wearing their shirts or fashion reprints. They dont like rock music but sure as hell wanna look like a rock star.
