Negotiated work pros: how did you build your network early in your career?

TL;DR: Project coordinator at a negotiated commercial GC trying to learn how to network and generate real project leads early in my career.

I work for a 20-person commercial GC doing mostly negotiated work (not hard bid). I’m a project coordinator and also support business development. I don’t come from a construction background, but I’m motivated to grow into a relationship-driven role and prove I can help build pipeline.

For people in commercial GC/CM:
– How do you actually build a network that leads to projects?
– Where do you meet owners, developers, architects, brokers, etc.?
– What actions early in your career paid off long-term?
– If you were starting from scratch in a regional market, what would you focus on?

We do multifamily, healthcare, senior living, retail, hospitality, etc., and are trying to grow negotiated relationships.

Looking for practical advice, not just “go to events.” Appreciate any real-world insight.
