*Usual Disclaimer: You won't understand this post unless you understand how the IIHF World Rankings work. If enough people want, I'll put together a separate post explaining it.*
Switzerland, with their silver medal, takes the top spot. They are the 6th different country to hold the #1 ranking, as Canada, Sweden, Finland, Russia and the United States (who just got dethroned by Switzerland) have all held the top spot at some point.
* *These rankings began in 2003, and I have to believe that based on their 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2001 Men's Worlds gold and 1998 Olympic gold, Czechia would have held #1 at some point just prior to 2003 if the rankings existed back then.*
The 2030 Olympics in France are upon us! Assuming no changes to the Olympic cycle, the World Rankings at the end of the 2027 World Championship will determine starting poiints for 2030 Olympic qualifications on the men's side.
* Top 8 + host France qualify automatically * 9th-17th will begin in Round 4 * 18th-26th will begin in Round 3 * 27th-35th will begin in Round 2 * 36th and below will begin in Round 1. * Anytime a country chooses not to participate, those ranked below them move up.
Prior to the start of the 2027 MWC season, I'll have a post explaining the qualification structure. #sport
