I've always wanted to go on a multi-day hike, but I have to travel to do it, how can I plan something like this?
Hello folks, I'm from Bahrain but happen to be someone who has a deep-seated desire to immerse myself in nature. Whenever I see videos on youtube (e.g., Maxim Budnick, Harmen Hoek) of people doing these multi-day hikes amidst endless gorgeous greenery, rivers, trees, mountains, I dream of experiencing something similar. I understand of course that some of these long backpacking trips are not advisable for a total beginner, so I'm trying to mainly focus on countries/areas that have lodge to lodge type routes. Though I still do want to experience camping in the wild.
Unfortunately I live in the middle of the desert, and many of these locations are far away which means I'd need to plan a proper holiday well ahead of time. I would love to visit the US or Canada, you guys have such beautiful landscape over there, however it is quite far and as a result costlier than say, traveling to Europe would be for me.
At the same time, I'm trying to make this a country that I would want to visit regardless, and also be able to hike while I'm there. A few places from my bucket list include: In Europe I would say Scotland, Ireland, Norway (Scandinavia in general), Italy, Greece, Spain. In Asia there's Japan, Korea, and China. Another one which is a must but is quite far is New Zealand, beautiful country and I'm a huge Lord of the Rings fan.
I've looked into these hiking trip companies like Wildland Trekking and Fresh Adventures, I really like what they offer but I found the prices to be rather steep. I understand I'm paying for the safety/peace of mind that comes with having a dedicated guide, and all the logistics being prepared for me. However, this got me thinking, there's tons of people out there doing stuff like this on their own, so perhaps I could save myself a lot of money by planning it myself.
I'd really appreciate if anyone here could share their experience if they happen to have been in a similar position. What might your recommendations be when it comes to traveling for the purpose of hiking? Are there any particular destinations which you would suggest? How can I prepare myself in terms of knowing what I'd need to bring with me? #hiking #activity source
