I've been "about to start" the same project for 14 months
Ok this is more of a confession than anything. There's a creative project I've been talking about starting since March of last year. I've bought the supplies. I've watched probably 40 hours of YouTube tutorials. I have a Pinterest board. I have a notebook full of ideas. I have not made a single thing.
And the worst part is I keep telling people about it. Like at parties when someone asks what I've been up to, I light up and talk about this project as if it exists. And every time I do that I walk away feeling a little worse, because saying it out loud and not doing it makes the gap between who I want to be and who I am feel wider.
I'd been writing about this on a therapy app I've been using Rae Chat, mostly because I was tired of journaling in circles about it in my actual notebook, and the reflection it surfaced kind of put a name on something I'd been dancing around.
"Talking about the project gives you the identity of someone who makes things without the risk of finding out if you actually can. The supplies aren't the bottleneck. The fear of being mediocre at something you care about is."
Yeah. That's the real one. I'd rather be a potential good artist forever than an actual mediocre one for a week. I made one ugly thing this morning. It's genuinely bad. But it exists, which is more than the imaginary good version ever did. #inspiration source
