AI will replace designers in 2026 I think a lot of people are misunderstanding what’s actually happening with AI and design. Yes — AI can generate UI now. And it’s getting scary good. Give it a prompt and you’ll get: * landing pages * dashboards * mobile screens * even full flows In seconds. So the obvious conclusion is: > I don’t think that’s true. But something *is* getting replaced. # What AI is actually replacing AI is killing the part of design that looks like this: * moving boxes around * picking colors manually * recreating the same layout patterns * building screens from scratch every time Basically: > That part is already 80–90% automatable. # The real problem with AI-generated UI Here’s what I’ve seen after testing a lot of tools: AI outputs look good in isolation. But fall apart in real projects. Why? * hardcoded values everywhere * no semantic color system * inconsistent spacing and hierarchy * doesn’t match any existing design system It’s not that AI is bad. It’s that it’s generating without structure. # What doesn’t get replaced The part that doesn’t go away is: * defining the system * deciding how colors behave * mapping roles → components * making sure everything works together In other words: > Designers who just produce screens probably do. # Where things are going I think the future workflow looks more like this: * Define system (tokens, roles, rules) * Apply it to real UI (templates / screens) * Let AI generate *inside that system* Instead of: > It becomes: > That’s a completely different game. # My current experience I’ve been building UI templates that AI can generate from. Around 15–20 screens in a few minutes, \~90% done. It’s fast. Really fast. But the only reason it works is because: * colors are predefined * components follow strict roles * templates define real screen structure Without that, the output becomes chaos. # So… will AI replace designers? Yes — if your job is pushing pixels. No — if your job is defining systems. # The uncomfortable truth AI doesn’t remove design. It removes *bad design processes*. And most workflows today are still: * ad hoc * inconsistent * screen-first instead of system-first That’s what’s actually getting replaced. Curious how others are dealing with this. Are you using AI for UI generation yet? Or still relying on traditional design flows? #art source | earnings |
