Context (for the ten thousandth time):

During the Six-day war between Israel and the Arab coalition, a US Navy research vessel entered waters off the coast of Sinai. Despite common misconceptions that it was a more substantial ship, the USS Liberty was a converted cargo ship hull of a variety that Egypt would have access too. The Arab Coalition was also under suspicion of the potential for false flag operations as it is a tactic used by Israel's enemies at the time.

When the ship was located the IDF contacted the US Navy and asked to confirm if they had a ship in the area. The US Navy denied that they had any ships in the region, so the IDF ordered an airstrike. The pilots could see the American flags and from their direct perspective knew the ships were not a false flag operation, but their commanders on the ground were told there were no US vessels in the area and that it must be an enemy vessel under false colors.

After the ship was attacked the US Navy accepted responsibility for the attack, as they had lied about the ship being American, and the IDF also identified their pilots' rigid adherence to orders over the reality on the ground as a contributing factor.

Conspiracy theorists, however, firmly believe that Israel had knowingly attacked a US ship for literally no identifiable reason and that the US Navy helped them cover this up, also for no reason. Mentioning the USS Liberty incident is a common dog whistle for antisemites.
