Taiwan’s opposition-controlled legislature approved the annual government budget late on Friday, ending a 266-day deadlock and retaining funding for drone development. 🛡️
The Kuomintang had threatened to cut the drone programme by 70%, but withdrew the proposal after concluding that the development and procurement programmes it had cited did not overlap wastefully.
The vote follows a May decision in which lawmakers approved NT$780 billion of a requested NT$1.25 trillion supplementary defence package, excluding funding for domestically made combat drones. The annual budget also cuts military equipment and facilities spending by 2.5%.
The approval ends reliance on a provisional budget mechanism for routine government spending and removes an immediate obstacle to drone funding. However, appropriations still must be translated into production, delivery, training, and integration before they become usable military capability. 📌
Legislative Speaker Han Kuo-yu said the delay had caused social division and a constitutional impasse, and called for greater compromise between the governing and opposition camps.
