Civil Engineering vs Construction Management for Someone Who Wants to Own a Concrete Company
I’m 18 and trying to figure out which direction I should take with college and my career.
My long-term goal is to get into **concrete construction** and eventually own my own concrete/construction company. My dad is involved in the industry, so I’ve been around it and would like to build something of my own eventually.
Right now I’m stuck between **Civil Engineering and Construction Management**.
I’m also considering joining the **Marines** mainly because of the education benefits, and I’d potentially use those benefits to pay for college.
For people who have actually worked in construction or own their own companies:
Would you recommend **Civil Engineering or Construction Management** for someone with my goals?
If I want to eventually own a **concrete contracting company**, which degree would be more useful?
Would a Civil Engineering degree give me advantages later, even if I ultimately want to be a contractor rather than a design engineer?
Would Construction Management be more useful for learning estimating, bidding, scheduling, project management, etc.?
How important is having actual **field experience** before trying to start a concrete company?
If you were 18 again and had the same goals, what would you do during your first 5–10 years?
I’m not necessarily looking to become an engineer forever. My ultimate goal is to **understand the construction business, get experience in concrete, and eventually build my own company**.
Any advice from contractors, supers, PMs, engineers, or business owners would be appreciated. #industry source
