13x growth in 8 years as a regular ‘CA

I see a lot of posts asking whether finance is still worth it, so I thought I’d share my journey.
I’m a traditional Chartered Accountant. No IIT, no Ivy League MBA, no extraordinary background. I started my career at inr 5 LPA, and after 8 years, my fixed salary alone is 13× that. This isn’t to brag—it’s to show that there are incredible opportunities in finance if you position yourself well.

A few things that genuinely helped me:
• Don’t chase the first opportunity. Early in your career, everyone feels pressure to switch quickly. Instead, wait for roles that have a strong long-term growth path. I did not join a traditional CA role like audit and tax and waited for the right opportunity.

• Choose the right role, not just the right company. Some finance domains compound your learning and compensation much faster than others. Spend time understanding where the market values expertise the most.
• Network is a career multiplier. Build genuine relationships. Connect with people on LinkedIn, stay in touch with colleagues, seniors, recruiters, and industry professionals. You never know who might refer you for your next opportunity. My most important break came because of my ex-boss.

• Aim for global exposure if possible. In my experience, MNCs generally offer better compensation, structured career paths, and exposure than many traditional firms.
• Keep building skills. The market rewards people who become specialists and consistently deliver value.
My biggest takeaway: your first salary doesn’t define your career. Your choices over the next few years do.
There are many people doing far better than me, and many just starting out. If this post gives even one person confidence that it’s possible to grow rapidly with the right decisions, it’s worth sharing.
Happy to answer questions if it helps anyone.
