🎾 Ben Shelton reached his first Grand Slam singles final by rallying past Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 in the US Open semifinal.
The 23-year-old American served 20 aces in a match lasting 3 hours and 16 minutes. He will face top seed Alexander Zverev in Sunday’s final.
Shelton is the first Black American man to reach the US Open singles final since Arthur Ashe in 1972. The victory also puts him one win from becoming the first American man to win a major singles title since Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open.
The semifinal followed Shelton’s five-set win over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. 🏆 Shelton had lost all five previous matches against Zverev, according to reports ahead of the final.
