So my (30f) daughter (6f) is in first grade. There’s a boy in her class, “Gabriel” (6m), who is always causing problems. I’ve had to tell my daughter to steer clear of him, because every time she’s around him, she gets in trouble, as does every other kid who plays with him.
My daughter is the person that if someone does something mean first, she does it right back. She’s a sweet kid, but she also doesn’t take any crap. The teacher (31f and in her second year of teaching) sees this, and there’s cameras in the school and classrooms too, and instead of separating him, she separates my daughter and she’s always isolated in a corner of the classroom. Her behavior is good and she does her work, unless this other kid is around, and he bugs other students as well, but the teacher does nothing still. She’ll ask for help doing her work, and the teacher ignores her. She does great with homework though. Her teacher leaves her to sink, whereas at home, we help her, but do have her try to figure it out by herself first and guide the way without giving out the answers.
It’s not like my daughter can transfer to a different class, because her school is in a rural area and there’s only one teacher per grade, and the closest school is almost 30 miles away. This kid (Gabriel) gets a talking-to by the teacher, but never reports. All the kids in the class complain about him. Three students even got pulled out and transferred to a farther school because they were in the same boat my daughter and I are in.
She’s also in an after school program until 5 for some extracurriculars, and an older boy (fourth grade) keeps messing with her, and instead of reprimanding him, they punish and separate my daughter.
I don’t know what to do at this point. I have a hard time being assertive, because I only know how to be passive or aggressive, never right there in the middle, if that makes sense. I absolutely hate conflict and confrontation, it makes me sick, and this who situation has been making me physically sick, and I know I need to say and do something about it, I just don’t know how to go about it. I just feel so defeated. Tomorrow (11/19) is parent-teacher conference, so I’m thinking about bringing it up then. #relationships source
