🗳️ Zambia’s Electoral Commission was still counting votes from the 13 August general election on Sunday, with President Hakainde Hichilema leading in partial presidential returns. Al Jazeera reported that, with more than half of constituencies counted, he had nearly 59% of the vote; a candidate needs more than 50% to avoid a runoff.

His nearest challenger, Brian Mundubile of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity, was reported at about one-third of the vote. The election also chooses members of parliament and local-government representatives, and is the first under constitutional changes that added proportional-representation seats for women, youths and persons with disabilities.

The count was briefly suspended on Friday after reports of violence against polling staff and alleged ballot theft, before the commission said the security threat had been contained. European Union and Southern African Development Community observers raised concerns about the suspension and reports of intimidation, while noting that their findings did not decide the result. ⚖️

Mundubile’s party alleged that armed personnel raided his Lusaka home and removed several people; authorities had not responded to the claim when it was reported. The commission must receive all presidential constituency results before formally declaring a winner, and any presidential result can be challenged before the Constitutional Court within seven days.
