What’s your favorite Garth Ennis book?

I know it’s in fashion to diss Garth Ennis, but Hitman is probably his best work imo (maybe it helped that he had to be reigned in a bit?)

The series was so absolutely bonkers anyway and the fact that it was set firmly in the at-the-time current DC continuity was so fun.

I haven’t read a lot of interviews and so Idk if Ennis hated having to work in a shared universe, but he did a great job.

The characters themselves dissed their in universe DC pop culture on the regular (save Superman, they loved Superman) but still Ennis contributed a Final Night issue, a DC One Million issue and even participated in the No Man’s Land event for 10 issues tho the covers did not carry the No Man’s Land title.

It’s so funny because the comic obviously had a meta “I hate you” approach to the superhero medium and crossover events (the characters at one point make fun of the crossover events, and sometimes I think it was definitely a precursor to The Boys and ‘Herogasm’…if you know, you know) and yet Hitman was born/created from a crossover event.

The Hitman finale storyline and the JLA/Hitman comic that came about after the series ended had one specific thing in common…they both dealt with ramifications of the “Bloodlines” crossover in which Tommy Monaghan (Hitman) was originally created.

Bloodlines was a DC Comics mega event in 1993 and every title being published was tasked to come up with an original character that would be given super powers after having their spinal fluid sucked from an alien. I think. Idk. It was fucking stupid.

Of the 20 or so heroes created, none of them lasted longer than 5 years (I’m being generous) in the medium. Except Hitman.

Bloodlines was a complete joke and disaster. Anyone in their right mind would’ve just let that storyline limp into limbo and never be spoken of again. And so I give Ennis props for devoting his last two Hitman storylines to that terrible ordeal and basically taking ownership over the crossover that created one of my favorite comic book characters.
