I’m pretty out of practice at hiking (was very sick for several years — doing better these days) and am hoping to get back out on the trails regularly in 2026. My dilemma is, as I’m sure many can relate, related to shoes.
Currently, I have a pair of Moab mids with GTX which are great for longer or more intense hikes, and a pair of Brooks sneakers I wear day to day or on paved trails, but I’m hoping to find a pair of shoes that falls somewhere in between, with the comfort and ankle flexibility of a shoe but is sturdy enough to handle rugged terrain comfortably and without major damage to the shoe (or me!)
I’ve narrowed it down to either the Merrell Moab 3s or the Moab Speed 2s and am quite interested in the speeds. However, I really want to know: are the Moab speeds rugged enough for moderate trails with some brief scrambling? There are some overall tame but rocky trails I enjoy that I’d never wear just my brooks for, but the full mid boots feel like overkill. How tough are the speed soles/uppers? Purely on looks the plain Moab 3s look tougher but looks can be deceiving. I haven’t gotten a chance to try them on in person yet, as I live quite far away from a store that carries merrell.
I wore sirens edge shoes for this sort of thing for many years (RIP my much-loved pair), but I’ve found the newer model less comfortable than what I’ve owned before. #activity #hiking source
