My daughter is 10 and just started 4th grade. She's always had trouble with reading and writing in general, but her biggest issue is spelling tests. For some reason she cannot spell words that she can read. The worst for her is when two letters are combined to make one sound like ch, tr, or bl; she just can't recognize that there's two separate letters. We're working through her word list for this week and she's on the word possible, but cannot for the life of her get past the b. She keeps wanting to spell it 'possibol', 'possibel', or 'possibul' and we had a similar problem with inspect just a moment ago where she was insistent that it was spelled 'inspech'.
When she does her 20 minutes of reading each night (aloud) she can read these words without issue so I really don't have any idea \*where\* the disconnect is happening for her and none of her other teachers have been able to figure it out either.
I don't want her to spend the rest of the school year failing her spelling tests, she got a 50% on the first one this past week even though we worked on her words every night and on the way to school in the morning. Every night I have her copy down the words, quiz her on them, and then she rewrites each one that she got wrong 5 times while spelling it out loud, but it's not helping. #relationships source
