I've been wanting to plant native plants for a while now for the pollentators and I have also been wanting to get something to cover our fence for our nosy (and noisy at times) dogs. After doing some research, it seems Clematis might be the direction I want to go with this project. However, I have a few logistics to work out and I’m hoping to confirm that with people who have the know-how since I am an incredibly novice plant person.
After research, I still have some questions I want to verify/confirm, and appreciate any help out there I can get. Thank you in advance.
1. My fence is mostly in full sun all day, and the only issue I see having is the roots needing shade. I don’t plan on planting anything else along the fence, but I read there are alternatives to protect the roots. I don’t really want to do mulch or woodchips since one of my dogs will mostly eat them and drag them across the rest of the yard. There was mention of using stone pieces on the base, but I’m not sure of the logistics of that. Do you plant the seeds and then put flat landscaping rocks over them? What about the grass that grows, too? How would you keep that in control and not damage the seedlings?
2. Should I plant the vines on the outside of my fence since I do have the dogs and they most likely will mess with them? It’d probably be pretty to have that stone base at the bottom, but again with the grass poking through … I guess I’m mostly in search of logistics. Please help. ❤️
3. Will the chain link burn the vines as they are growing? I read that is a possibility, but also a ton of people say chain link is fine for Clematis. Definitely want to confirm my specific scenario of the fence being in the sun all day long. #activity source
