📊 The United States’ gross national debt surpassed $40 trillion for the first time, according to Treasury data reported Wednesday by the Associated Press and The Guardian. The Guardian reported a latest balance of about $40.047 trillion.
The figure is total public debt outstanding, which combines debt held by outside investors with intragovernmental holdings, including Treasury securities held by federal trust funds. It is therefore different from debt held by the public, the measure commonly used for debt-to-GDP analysis.
The milestone reflects accumulated borrowing from years in which federal outlays exceeded revenue, not a single new expense. CBO’s February baseline projected a $1.9 trillion deficit for fiscal 2026 and said rising interest costs, Social Security, and Medicare spending would contribute to higher outlays relative to the economy. ⚖️
The statutory debt limit was set at $41.1 trillion in July 2025, CBO said, though debt subject to that limit is not exactly the same as gross debt. CBO projected debt held by the public at 101% of GDP in 2026 and 120% in 2036 under its current-law assumptions.
