William Gannaway Brownlow was a methodist preacher, newspaper editor, and politician from East Tennessee, and a candidate for the biggest hater in human history. His claim to fame is as a core member of the Trimvirate of East Tennessee Unionist leaders, alongside Andrew Johnson and T.A.R. Nelson. Unlike Johnson, who famously fumbled the ball after the war, and Nelson, who accepted a pardon from the Ck federated govornment, Brownlow was uncompromising and unflinching, and eventually came to support the emancipation proclamation, the total abolition of slavery, and equal rights, becoming one of the biggest champions of civil rights in the 19th century after the war.
James. P. Brownlow was the second son of "Parson" Brownlow, and is regarded as one of the best figjting cavalry officers of the war, with the qst (East) Tennessee cavalry known as one of the best mounted regiments in Union service. Among his many feats, he led a naked raid across the Chattahoochee river with nine men and took twelve rebel prisoners, and in his last fight, cut his way so close to Gen. Joe Wheeler that he camptured his hat, before bejng shot through both legs and carried off the field. He was promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers in 1866, at the age of 23, and died in 1879, at 36.
