Should I go all in on Siri/HomeKit or Alexa?
I’m looking to expand my smart home and I’m stuck in the phase where I’m determining which assistant I want to move forward with.
We have the original Google display and some minis right now, but are almost certainly getting rid of them. They’ve become awful at answering certain question and they are the worst when it comes to quickly controlling things like lights.
We’re a mixed device household. My wife is on a Pixel and has a work and personal laptop. I have an iPhone, iPad and AirPods. We have two Apple TVs, Nest Hello doorbell, Nest thermostat, and some Hue bulbs w/bridge. Thinking about ditching the Nest thermostat for an Ecobee, though.
That’s the simplicity of our home right now. I’m hoping to add some smart switches and things like smart blinds soon.
I just bought an Echo Dot to give Alexa a shot again and I really like the routines and responsiveness for controlling lights, so far. But the Alexa app is a nightmare. Is there any type of useful interface for controls on any of the Echo Show devices? I’m also worried that Amazon is going to bail on Alexa with how much money they’re losing. That and Alexa is always trying to sell something even if you change the settings.
Anyway, with my reliance on Apple, I’m considering going all-in with HomeKit/Siri. I love the ease of HomeKit’s design, but the automations seem a bit limited (though I know there’s shortcuts). And I’d probably have to get something HomeBridge to pull in my Nest products. How useful would a HomePod Mini be for my wife if she doesn’t have an iPhone?
I know a lot of people mix them all, but that gets confusing for us.
Eventually, I would maybe dabble with HomeAssistant, but that’d be time dependent.
Would love some thoughts.
