Pakistan’s parliament has passed the Defence Forces of Pakistan Act, 2026, creating the legal framework for a new top military command structure. 🪖

The Act establishes Defence Forces Headquarters under the Chief of Defence Forces, a post held concurrently by the army chief. It gives the CDF operational command and control across the armed forces.

The change follows Pakistan’s Twenty-seventh Constitutional Amendment, which abolished the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee position. The earlier post coordinated among the services; the new arrangement formalizes a single command office.

Lawmakers also passed amendments to the National Command Authority Act, 2010, updating references to the abolished office and adding the commander of the National Strategic Command. The changes align Pakistan’s strategic-command law with the wider military overhaul. ⚖️

The cabinet approved drafts of both measures on August 20 before their passage through the National Assembly and Senate. Opposition lawmakers raised objections over the time provided to examine the bills.
