Does anyone else get weirdly embarrassed and protective…

Does anyone else get weirdly embarrassed and protective when introducing friends to each other?

I have noticed this pattern of mine: whenever I introduce a person or group of people to another I get overly judgemental of every word they say, the general tone of voice and facial expression, and I overly analyse what the group is thinking of them.

I cringe and feel second-hand embarrassment if they say anything weird or not very smart, act in an unusual way, tell an inside joke that the group isn't ready to hear, or their nervousness causes them to be overly-sarcastic or tease me in hope to get a laugh from the group.

I don't like my behaviour because I feel like I'm not having my friend's back: instead of cringing when they say something a bit weird I could support them, help them feel safe. At the very least I could stop judging them so much and act as if they are performing in front of the group; that they need to make a good impression as if my reputation depended on that. I wish I could just let them be.

Have you experienced the same? Is there a trick or a mantra I can tell myself in the moment to try and stop this automatic reflex?
