Finally finished my garden automation project: a solar powered irrigation controller that uses environmental sensors to determine when to water
Two of my hobbies are constantly at odds with each other. On one hand I like building my homestead because it’s physical; I can work with my hands and build something physical. On the other hand I enjoy building large software systems because it’s mentally demanding and can be incredibly practical
At this point I’m just embracing them both and treating software like anything else — a tool that has a time and a place.
Over the last year+ I’ve been building a system of devices that help me monitor or automate my land and animals. I think I’ve finally gotten the infrastructure for it ironed out after finishing its biggest integration.
This is a solar powered irrigation controller with 8 zones. Each zone runs independently and can be controlled by environmental sensors or schedules. I’ve also hooked it up with a weather feed so I can skip watering if rain is expected.
I’m posting this here because I want to share it with someone. I spent too much time building this to keep it to myself lol. #home source
