Religious teacher teaching objectively wrong things
Ik it's long but I want to give as much context as possible and get some opinions from fellow atheists.
I live in Greece were orthodox Christianity is the official religion and even tho there is freedom of religion and I don't have many problems with being an atheist (except from being called the antichrist by a couple of kids I don't even talk to and of course Christianity being tough in school). Up until now our religious teacher was really chill with me not doing anything in class. We had this thing that she doesn't bother me I didn't bother her.
But this year we got a different religious teacher (even most of the Christian kids hate him) who doesn't know anything about religion, only Christianity. He started of by saying there are multiple world views/religions and this year we'll be talking about the other religions (from 1st grade up to middle school we only talk about Christianity) to see why Christianity is the true/best religion. He started of with atheism.
I'll put in almost everything said in class and every time I talked I raised my hand and got permission by him so I wasn't interrupting him
Tacher: the main question in life is if god is real and it only has 2 answers. Yes or No
Me: sir there is 3
Teacher: there is no "we don't know". Atheism is a religion that answers this question with No
Me: atheism isn't a religion it's the lack there of
Teacher: that's what they say. I can say I'm the smartest man alive that doesn't make it true
Me: sir the definition of atheism and religion is basically an antonym.
Teacher: atheism is a religion because it's an opinion about god. Atheist believe that the only thing that exists is the material world and that the universe exists out of pure chance, there is no life after death so our life is pointless. *writes on the board* meterialsm = atheism. Atheist used to say that the world always existed but then after the big bang theory they changed (he brought this up to say that atheists change up our beliefs).
I talked about all these with my friends who are all Christians but only believe the love the neighbour stuff, they don't take the bible literally but believe there is a god. They also didn't like most of the stuff he said.
What I'm going to do next time we have class with him:
Bring a dictionary and read the definition of religion and atheism
Tell him about the third answer to "does god exists" agnostics and gnostics
Explain to him what a theory means in science (he doesn't believe in the big bang and says it's just a theory with no proof)
Tell him that every religion has changed it's views to accommodate for new ideas (being gay is ok, the big bang etc.) and atheism isn't a religion and only means that you don't believe in god, atheism doesn't say anything about the world, you could believe in the after life and be an atheist. Meterialsm isn't atheism, most atheist are just also materialists which means they believe in science, so if science discovers something it's not the same as a religion changing something.
Tell him that thinking that the only thing giving us purpose is god is selfish since it basically is "why does anything good i do matter if i don't get eternal life in heaven. Why help the community if I'm going to die" Do you think I should say anything else maybe tell me something I should have ready for next time (like answers to common things Christians say about other religions or their own). And also can I take legal action against him to get him out of teaching since h though factually wrong information and said Christiano is the only true religion. #religion source
