Let's talk about exploration

So, I was playing Pragmata today, and I kept thinking about the different types of exploration in gaming landscape. I just wanted to start a conversation and see what do you guys think and some other games you like on this regard.

So, to recollect the thoughts I had with some examples:

1. On one hand we have the great open worlds with great exploration. Im leaving out the ubisofts with all markers. I'm talking about Elden ring or Zelda BOTW. This games let you explore freely, and don't need a thousand markers in the map because you can actually see some type of visual cue that will incite you to say: "oh, that looks funny I should check it out". Those two are probably my top in this category.

2. We also have that linear kinds I was talking about at the beginning. Pragmata or Doom (2016 and eternal) are great examples of this. You have a clear main path and then you have a hundred little jumps, drops, turns or breakable objects. It is simple, not time consuming and creates diversity. Im always amazed about how a linear game can have such a good exploration and things hidden from the main path haha.

3. Metroidvanias have their own explorations system as they require certain abilities, keys or checks of some kind in order to keep progressing. The sense of discovery I'm games like Hollow Knight or Castlevania SOTN is incredible. I feel like im most of this games the map is a character or ability on its own because you can feel how important it is, and appreciate when it's well done.

4. Obviously the other big thing is the assassin's Creed, horizon and such, in which exploration is, in most cases, activities to check with a question mark in the map. Nowadays is more customizable but I think there is a lot of tedium about it in gaming community as whole.

5. Scary_Corner3489 reminded me about another important type I felt I needed to edit the post to include them. Exploration as the core of the game. Outer Wilds I haven't played but I get it. I put it with Blue Prince or Tunic. I love Tunic and I forgot about it, shame on me. Exploration IS the main mechanic. Tunic is great in that you discover things around using the manual!

Those would be some of my best picks. I also kinda hate collectibles without purpose in game (like the plushies in doom) haha I feel they are so unrewarded exploring. And I don't really like exploration.

So, what are some games with great exploration that you enjoy and some that you hate and why? Cheers!
