Is it really unsafe to stay in Downtown or Hollywood in Los Angeles?

I’m planning to travel to Los Angeles in September, and I’m wondering about choosing a hotel.

I see a lot of reviews advising against certain neighborhoods like Downtown or Hollywood.

Concretely, what makes them dangerous? Am I at risk of being assaulted when leaving my hotel?
