🇺🇸 President Donald Trump ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce annual joint military exercises with South Korea after the drills began, according to the Associated Press and NPR.
Trump said South Korea had declined to join the U.S. war against Iran and argued that the exercises were costly and sent an inappropriate signal to North Korea. He also cited his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises are among the two principal annual U.S.–South Korean combined drills. They include practice for joint operations such as precision targeting, maneuver, river crossings and distribution of prepositioned equipment. 🪖
South Korea’s Defense Ministry said the exercises started as planned. The reports did not specify the scale, duration or particular components of the reductions, while North Korea had already criticized the drills and threatened a response. ⚠️
