At what point do long road trips start costing more in vehicle wear than theyre actually worth?
Been thinking about this lately after a few bigger road trips over the past couple years.
I always treated road trips as “cheap travel” because compared to flights and hotels, driving your own vehicle feels affordable in the moment.
But once I started looking closer, I realized I barely account for anything beyond gas.
Not tires. Not oil changes. Not extra mileage. Not brakes. Not the random maintenance that always seems to show up after a long haul.
A friend recently asked to borrow my SUV for a multi-state trip and it weirdly made me think about how little I actually understand the real operating cost of long-distance driving.
Now I’ve been paying more attention to maintenance timing, trip mileage, and repair patterns just out of curiosity.
Honestly kinda changed the way I look at “cheap” road trips.
Do most people here actually think about vehicle wear costs when planning big drives, or is it more of a “just enjoy the trip and deal with it later” thing? #travel #activities source
