The man who died standing
Italian football legend, Roberto Baggio, carried his team to the 1994 World Cup finals despite a knee injury. Baggio was one of the biggest football stars of the 90s and was known to be an excellent penalty taker who never missed, therefore he was chosen to take the last penalty to secure the win for his country. Unfortunately, he missed the crucial penalty that cost him the World Cup against Brazil. He never missed a penalty until that day and left his country in complete shock. He stood there, emotionless for a very long time with his head down and was nicknamed, “The man who died standing.” He then left the pitch in tears. Baggio was heavily criticized and booed by his country after this loss. He then went on to say that he could’ve ended his life that day and feel nothing. He never forgave himself for this. To this day, he sometimes doesn’t sleep well at night because of that moment, as it was his childhood dream to lift the World Cup.
